Yoga Preparation

Before practicing and performing yoga, it is not only good to choose which style of yoga you seek to perform but also to be aware and prepare your surroundings for proper practice and exercise.  Below are some ideas to help you prepare for a wonderful experience:

Seek out a proper time for yoga practice.  Experts say that early in the morning or late in the evening are the best times of day.  This is probably due to the energy flow and the energy you will create or absorb when performing yoga postures.

As far as atmosphere is concerned, a well ventilated and clean room is best.  If you don’t want to stay indoors, gardens or other open spaces are also ideal.  As long as the space is clean, clear, and comfortable, your concentration on the exercises at hand will be more focused.

Equipment wise, all yoga practioners use a mat or a thick blanket.  These help with steady postures and also to help prevent injuries.  Pillows are good too, especially for those poses that are hard on them and in the end when its time to cool down the body by a lying down pose.

Physically, yoga exercises or asanas should be done on an empty stomach.  3 hours should be allowed after at least one meal, 1 hour after a light refreshment, and/or 1/2 hour after a light drink.  In addition, the bladder should be emptied and the mouth clean.

Because yoga is practiced in a natural environment, the body should be that way too with no drugs or alcohol.  In addition, it is good to keep a good diet that will help keep the body lean as well as help shed off some weight as the practices goes on and continues.

For women, during their period or menstrual flow, asanas should not be performed.  If you are pregnant, it is advised to stop yoga practice 5 months into your pregnancy.

If you have had surgery, it is best to wait at least 3 months unless you have permission from your doctor to begin or continue your practice.  Because of difficulty levels of some of the postures, some of those should be practiced at least 6 months after the surgery, unless you are able to start early.

If you do decide to take a shower, take it about an hour before yoga practice and about half an hour later after practice so that way the body can be hydrated and still functional.

Comfortable clothes should be worn to allow free flowing movement of the body.  Tight clothing will hinder movement and will be as uncomfortable as overstretching too much.

Before the actual practice of yoga, it is best to perform stretching exercises.  This is done by flexing and loosening the body in various stretches that will help warm up the body before the practice of asanas and other postures.

When performing yoga, it is best to not try any kind of bending or other moments by force nor extend oneself to the point where the body is in pain.  Even for a high-level pose or posture, it is advised to perform it to the best of one’s ability.  That is why stretching equipment and aids are used.

These are just some rules of preparation in order to perform yoga to the best of your ability.  If you follow these rules carefully, not only will you see results, but your goals of balancing the mind, body, and spirit will be achieved.
